Elastases are enzymes in mammals which can cleave peptide bonds, so-called proteases. Within the serine proteases they form a subfamily closely related to chymotrypsin. Several, but not all, elastases are capable of digesting elastin, a body-specific structural protein, which resulted in the name of the group. In humans, nine enzymes are currently known, which are counted as elastases. Elastases are proteins with 250-270 amino acid residues. In humans, the elastases are an important part of the immune response to pathological gramnegative germs in the lung, the gastrointestinal tract, but also on wounds. They cleave peptide bonds on the carboxy side of small hydrophobic amino acids, For example, glycine, alanine, and valine. Their effect is, however, so unspecific that it also endangers the carcinogenic tissue and plays a role pathologically in pulmonary infections and arthritis. There are several elastase inhibitory proteins in the body, including α1-antitrypsin, SLPI, elafin and alpha-2-macroglobulin.

Elastasen sind Enzyme in Säugetieren, die Peptidbindungen spalten können, so genannte Proteasen. Innerhalb der Serinproteasen bilden sie eine Unterfamilie, die mit Chymotrypsin nahe verwandt ist. Mehrere, aber nicht alle Elastasen sind in der Lage, Elastin zu verdauen, ein körpereigenes Strukturprotein, woraus der Name der Gruppe entstand. Beim Menschen sind derzeit neun Enzyme bekannt, die zu den Elastasen gezählt werden. Elastasen sind Proteine mit 250–270 Aminosäureresten. Die Elastasen sind im Menschen ein wichtiger Teil der Immunantwort auf pathologische gramnegative Keime in der Lunge, im Magen-Darm-Trakt, aber auch auf Wunden. Sie spalten Peptidbindungen auf der Carboxyseite von kleinen hydrophoben Aminosäuren, wie z. B. Glycin, Alanin und Valin. Ihre Wirkung ist dabei aber so unspezifisch, dass dadurch auch körpereigenes Gewebe gefährdet ist und sie pathologisch bei Lungenentzündungen und Arthritis eine Rolle spielt. Es existieren im Körper mehrere Elastase-Hemmproteine, unter anderem α1-Antitrypsin, SLPI, Elafin und Alpha-2-Makroglobulin.
