extravasation

Extravasat

In the context of the so-called extravasation, extravasation refers in a narrow sense to blood exuded from a vein and lying in the body. In a broader sense, any fluid discharged from the blood vessel, lymphatics, or urinary system, which is distributed in the surrounding tissue and leads to an edematous swelling. The extravasate may contain blood cells. The extravasate differs from exudation in that the vessel walls are whole, and only a part of the blood-fluid is exuded, but no blood-globules. In clinical medicine, the term is used as a term for an injection or infusion fluid which arrives next to a punctured blood vessel, see parasavate. Extravasation is the term in many languages, Such as English or Italian, as well as those in German at the beginning of the 20th century. The current German medical specialist language is an exception here and calls this process paravasation.
