flavonoids

Flavonoide

The flavonoids are a group of secondary plant materials, which include a large part of the flower dyes. They derive chemically from the backbone of the flavan and consist of two aromatic rings connected by a tetrahydropyran ring. In nature, there are around 8000 compounds whose diversity is due to different oxidation states in the oxygen-containing ring, different substitutions on the aromatic rings and the addition of sugars. The biosynthesis proceeds via the shikimic acid pathway. Flavonoids are universally present in plants, thus also in human food. They are particularly antioxidant properties. Several flavonoid-containing plants are used medically. The flavonoids were discovered in the 1930s by the Nobel Prize laureate Albert von Szent-Györgyi Nagyrapolt and designated as vitamin P. The "P" in vitamin P stands for "permeability factor".
