The libretto is the text of an opera, an oratorio, an operetta, a musical or a cantata; In a broader sense, scenarios for ballets and mimes are sometimes referred to as libretti. The term emerges at the beginning of the 18th century, but it is only common in the course of the 19th century. The literary sciences research discipline dealing with the libretto as a literary genre is called librettology.
