rhizoid

Rhizoid

Rhizoids are "quasi-roots", especially in mosses, but also, for example, in the case of the arm-like algae and some seed-plants, for example the water-hoses. In contrast to the roots of higher plants, rhizoids in mosses do not have a specialized conducting tissue. The nutrient and water intake is therefore of less importance than the anchoring function. In leafy mosses, they consist of filaments of single cells, in the liver and horns of long, tubular single strands.
