Sextant

A sextant is a nautical and optical measuring instrument that can be used to determine the angle between the viewing directions to relatively distant objects, in particular the angular distance of a star from the horizon. It is mainly used to measure the altitude of stars for astronomical navigation at sea, but also rarely in aviation and expeditions. Previously, it was also used in astronomy and land surveying. The name Sextant comes from the frame, which is a circular sector of about 60 °, which makes angle measurements possible in double circumference, that is to say by 120 °, due to the mirror law. The sextant therefore has a scale of at least 120 °. The older octant has a scale of at least 90 °. Its frame is about one eighth of a circle, that is 45 °. The name is derived from this, analogous to the sextant. On the other hand, the quadrant is an angle meter with respect to the direction of the beam.
