Sorghumhirsen

The species of the genus Sorghum from the family of the sweet grasses is designated as sorghum. Also the spelling of "Sorgum" is occasionally to be found. Economically most important species of this taxon is the carrot millet, which is the most important grain in Africa and is also planted in Southern Europe, Central America and South Asia. It is mainly used for the production of flour and as a feed for livestock and is the grain which in 2010 has the fifth largest cultivation area worldwide - after wheat, maize, rice and barley. Originally from East Africa, it is adapted to a hot and dry climate. Another known species is the sudangrae used mainly as a forage plant, but also as an energy plant. The carrot millet is also used as bird feed.
