virion

Virion

Virion or rarely also Viron is a single viral particle, which is in contrast to a virus outside a cell. A virion consists of one or more nucleic acid molecules, which are often surrounded by a protein capsule, the capsid. Possibly, further proteins are present, for example, with enzymatic activities in the virion. In some viruses, the virion also consists of an outer lipid membrane, the viral sponge.
