Streptomycin is an antibiotic drug, the first of a class of drugs called aminoglycosides to be discovered, and it was the first cure for tuberculosis. It is derived from the actinobacterium Streptomyces griseus. Streptomycin is a bactericidal antibiotic. Adverse effects of this medicine are ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, fetal auditory toxicity, and neuromuscular paralysis. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, a list of the most important medication needed in a basic health system.
