WHAT DOES SYNAGOGUE MEAN IN ENGLISH?

synagogue

Synagogue

A synagogue, also spelled synagog is a Jewish house of prayer. When broken down, the word could also mean "learning together". Synagogues have a large hall for prayer, and may also have smaller rooms for study and sometimes a social hall and offices. Some have a separate room for Torah study, called the beth midrash "beis midrash —בית מדרש. Synagogues are consecrated spaces that can be used only for the purpose of prayer; however a synagogue is not necessary for worship. Communal Jewish worship can be carried out wherever ten Jews assemble. Worship can also be carried out alone or with fewer than ten people assembled together. However there are certain prayers that are communal prayers and therefore can be recited only by a minyan. The synagogue does not replace the long-since destroyed Temple in Jerusalem. Israelis use the Hebrew term beyt knesset. Jews of Ashkenazi descent have traditionally used the Yiddish term "shul" in everyday speech. Spanish and Portuguese Jews call the synagogue an esnoga.

Definition of synagogue in the English dictionary

The first definition of synagogue in the dictionary is a building for Jewish religious services and usually also for religious instruction. Other definition of synagogue is a congregation of Jews who assemble for worship or religious study. Synagogue is also the religion of Judaism as organized in such congregations.

1
Sholom Aleichem
To go to the synagogue with one's father on the Passover eve - is there in the world a greater pleasure than that? What is it worth to be dressed in new clothes from head to foot, and to show off before one's friends? Then the prayers themselves - the first Festival evening prayer and blessing.
2
Utkarsh Ambudkar
I didn't go to church, I didn't go to synagogue; I went to temple, Hindu temple, where I prayed to my Hindu gods - whether or not I believe in it is another story.
3
Yehuda Amichai
I was a very religious child - I went to synagogue at least once, sometimes twice, a day. And I remember my religiousness as good - I think religion is good for children, especially educated children, because it allows for imagination, a whole imaginative world apart from the practical world.

6

I remember my father, who was 'somebody' in the synagogue, bringing home with him one of the poor men who waited outside to be chosen to share the Passover meal. These patriarchal manners I remember well, although there was about them an air of bourgeois benevolence which was somewhat comic.

8
Caroline Leavitt

9
Peter Malkin
I spent a lot of time in churches. If you go to a synagogue, someone is always asking if you're alone, if you're married. In a church, in a hundred years no one would ask.
10
David Novak
The most important part of the process of mourning is regularly reciting kaddish in a synagogue. Kaddish is a doxology, which Jewish tradition has mandated children to recite daily in a synagogue during the year of mourning for a deceased parent and then on the anniversary of his or her death thereafter.
