That tradition has been multiple and discontinuous, yet the term has often been used to invoke a powerful effect of cultural identity and historical continuity—"the Greeks and the Elizabethans, in one cultural form; Hellenes and Christians, in a common activity," as Raymond Williams puts it. The first definition of tragedy in the dictionary is a play in which the protagonist, usually a man of importance and outstanding personal qualities, falls to disaster through the combination of a personal failing and circumstances with which he cannot deal. Other definition of tragedy is a play in which the protagonist is overcome by a combination of social and psychological circumstances. Tragedy is also any dramatic or literary composition dealing with serious or sombre themes and ending with disaster.
