My mother's family is Christian: her father was a Baptist lay preacher, and her brother, in a leap of Anglican upward mobility, became a vicar in the Church of Wales. But my mother converted to Islam on marrying my father. She was not obliged to; Muslim men are free to marry ahl al-kitab, or people of the Book - among them, Jews and Christians.

WHAT DOES VICAR MEAN IN ENGLISH?

vicar

Vicar

A vicar is a representative, deputy or substitute; anyone acting "in the person of" or agent for a superior. In this sense, the title is comparable to lieutenant. Linguistically, vicar is cognate with the English prefix "vice", similarly meaning "deputy". The title appears in a number of Christian ecclesiastical contexts, but also as an administrative title, or title modifier, in the Roman Empire. In addition, in the Holy Roman Empire a local representative of the emperor, perhaps an archduke, might be styled "vicar".

Definition of vicar in the English dictionary

The first definition of vicar in the dictionary is a clergyman appointed to act as priest of a parish from which, formerly, he did not receive tithes but a stipend. Other definition of vicar is a clergyman who acts as assistant to or substitute for the rector of a parish at Communion. Vicar is also a clergyman in charge of a chapel.
