Bifocal lens

Lente bifocal

Bifocal lenses are corrective lenses that contain two different powers. They are mostly used for people with presbyopia and also require correction for myopia or farsightedness. If correction is also required for intermediate distances, trifocal or progressive lenses may be used. The bifocal lens was popularized at the end of the eighteenth century by Benjamin Franklin, who had experienced great annoyance due to the need for two pairs of glasses to correct distant and near vision. Taking advantage of the fact that when a person looks at something at close range usually looks down and vice versa, the first bifocals were designed with close-up lenses in the lower half of the mount and the lenses for far vision at the top. Originally, the lenses were simply cut in two and combined on the mount. At present most bifocals consist of a small segment molded inside or on the lens. Bifocal lenses are available with the reading segment in a wide variety of shapes and widths. The most popular is the 28mm straight top.
