Hippoglossus hippoglossus

Hippoglossus hippoglossus

Halibut, halibut, halibut or halibut is a flatfish of the Pleuronectidae family of large size, reaching 1.2 m in length and about 200 kg in weight. There are rare specimens up to 3 m and 320 kg. It is frequently found in the Atlantic Ocean. Often confused with the sole or considered as a subspecies of that, but although it belongs to the same order, it is not from the same family. It can go down to 2,000 m depth. It is very slow growing and its overfishing is putting it at risk of extinction. It is one of the species of the genus used for the extraction of hypoglossal liver oil.
