Levada

A levada is an irrigation canal or aqueduct of the island of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. The levadas were originally created by the need to supply the island's south, more populated and with more agricultural production, but drier, with water coming from the west or northwest of the island, where precipitations are more abundant. The reason is the extraordinarily mountainous relief of the island, which is its 1,800 m maximum altitude retains the trade winds on its north face and gives rise to a type of vegetation known as laurisilva, which condenses the humidity of the clouds. In the sixteenth century, the Portuguese began to construct the levadas to irrigate the sugar cane plantations, since, at that time, sugar was known as "white gold", and very soon the vineyards that would produce Madeira wine. At that time, the construction, made with wood and volcanic stone, was private for irrigation, a few were used to carry water from one side to the other of the island. In the nineteenth century, the state began to subsidize the construction of levadas and cement appears.
