WHAT DOES MELISMA MEAN IN SPANISH?

Melisma

In music, melisma is the technique of changing the height of a musical syllable while it is sung. According to Jesús Giralt i Radigales et al. Can refer to the music of Ancient Greece, in which a long note was replaced by a succession of short notes, or to the Gregorian Chant in which several notes were sung on the same syllable. The music sung in this style is called melismatic, as opposed to syllabic, where each syllable of text corresponds to a single note. In ancient cultures, this type of musical technique was used to achieve a hypnotic trance in those who listened to it, which was useful for early rites of musical initiation, and religious worship. This style can still be found today in part of Hindu and Arabic music. In Western music, the term is most commonly referred to as the Gregorian Chant, although it is also used to describe music of any other genre, including baroque and gospel singing. Aretha Franklin is considered one of the modern representatives of this technique.
