País

The word country can refer to a nation, a region, a province, or a territory. It is the main synonym for a national state, a well-defined geographic area, and a politically independent entity, with its own government, administration, laws, and most of the time a constitution, a police force, armed forces, tax laws, and A human group. Sometimes parts of a state with a characteristic history or culture are called countries, especially by the locals, such as Scotland, Wales, England or Northern Ireland. It can also refer to regions or even districts without great cultural differences with those of the surroundings. This use is especially given when speaking of the natural regions of France since the Spanish term "country" comes from the French pays, language in which the term also has this polysemy. In turn, the French term comes from the late Latin pagesis. Similar origin has the term payés.
