Penates

Di Penates or in abbreviated form Penates were, in Roman mythology, originally protective geniuses of the household store. Subsequently, they become gods of the homes offering protection to the whole house, there being also the protectors of the state. They were related to Lares, Genios and Larvae. The Penates are mentioned by Propercio. The name is derived from penus, the pantry or house warehouse. Initially they were in charge of protecting the pantries, and then extended to the whole house. They were offered a portion of the daily food, which was to be placed in the heart of the figure that represented them. The magistrates of the city were taking oath before the public Penates. Sometimes the Penates were represented as a couple of young people. On the hill Velia in Rome existed a temple dedicated to them.
