Rosa

The genus Rosa is composed of a well-known group of thorny and flowering shrubs, the principal representatives of the Rosaceae family. It is denominated rose to the flower of the members of this sort and rosal to the plant. The number of species is around 100, the majority originating in Asia and a small number native to Europe, North America and North-West Africa. Both species and cultivars and hybrids are grown as ornamental because of the beauty and fragrance of their flower; But also for the extraction of essential oil, used in perfumery and cosmetics, medicinal and gastronomic uses. There is a huge variety of cultivars from various hybridizations, and new ones appear every year. The progenitor species mainly involved in the cultivars are: Rosa moschata, Rosa gallica, Rosa damascena, Rosa wichuraiana, Rosa californica and Rosa rugosa. Twentieth-century rose growers focused on size and color to produce large, attractive flowers, though with little or no aroma.
