Serosa

Serosa

In anatomy, a serous is an epithelial membrane composed of a thin layer of epithelial cells and another thin layer of connective tissue. The serous ones cover the body cavities and cover the organs that are in them, besides secreting an aqueous fluid that reduces the friction and acts as lubricant in the friction between the different elements of that cavity. They differ from the adventitious membranes in which the function of the latter is to maintain the location of the organs rather than diminish the friction, which is the function of the serous. Each serosa is composed of a secretory epithelial layer and a layer of underlying connective tissue. ▪ The epithelial layer, called the mesothelium, consists of a simple squamous epithelium, that is, an avascular monolayer of flattened nucleated cells, strongly attached to the underlying tissue. They produce the serous lubricating fluid, which has a consistency like fine mucus. ▪ Connective tissue provides nutrients to the epithelium through blood vessels, as well as innervation. In addition, it serves as an anchor layer of the serosa to other organs and body structures.
