Cross-correlation is sometimes used in statistics to designate the covariance Cov of the random vectors X and Y in order to distinguish this concept from the "covariance" of a random vector X which is understood to be the covariance matrix of the coordinates of X In signal processing, cross-correlation is the measure of the similarity between two signals. The term covariance between two signals A and B is used in the case of the statistical definition:, and the term of cross-correlation in the case of a temporal definition:. The two concepts are equivalent if the signals are ergodic to order two. The Fourier transform of cross-correlation is the spectral density of interaction:. It will be noted that the convolution product is equivalent to the cross-correlation of A and B.
