में होनेवाला मझोले आकार का एक प्रसिद्ध कँटीला वृक्ष ।
विशेष—इसके छोटे बड़े कई भेद होते हैं । यह वृक्ष जब जंगली
दशा में होता है, तब झरबेरी कहलाता है और जब कलम
लगाकर तैयार किया जाता है तब उसे पेबंदी (पैवंदी)
कहते हैं । इसकी पत्तियाँ चारे के काम में और छाल चमड़ा
सिझाने के काम में आती है । बंगाल में इस वृक्ष की पत्तियों
पर रेशम के कीड़ें भी पलते हैं । इसकी लकड़ी कड़ी और
कुछ लाली लिए हुए होती है और प्रायः खेती के औजार
बनाने और इमारत के काम में आती है । इसमें एक प्रकार के लबोतरे फल लगते हैं जिनके अंदर बहुत कड़ी गुठली
होती है । यह फल पकने पर पीले रंग का जाता है और
मीठा होने के कारण खूब खाया जाता है । कलम लगाकर
इसके फलों का आकार और स्वाद बहुत कुछ बढ़ाया
जाता है ।
