वह दार्शनिक सिद्रांत जिसमें आत्मा और
परमात्मा अर्थात् जीव और ईश्वर दो भिन्न पदार्थ मानकर
विचार किया जाता है ।
विशेष—उत्तरमीमांसा या वेदांत को छोड़ शेष पाँचो दर्शन द्वेत-
वादी माने जाते हैं । द्वेतवादियों का कथन है कि ब्रह्म
और जीव का भेद नित्य है पर अद्वैतवादी कहते है कि
यह भेदज्ञान भ्रम है । जिस समय जीव अपने को ब्रह्म स्वरूप
समझ लेता है उस समय वह मुक्त हो जाता है । केवल
उपाधि के कारण जीव अपने को ब्रह्म से भिन्न समझता
है, उपाधि हट जानी पर वह ब्रह्म में मिल जाता है । द्वैत-
वादी जीव की उपाधि को नित्य मानते हैं पर अद्वैतवादी
उसे हटाने की चेष्टा करने का उपदेश देते हैं । जिस प्रकार
अदैतवादी 'तत्वमसि' उपनिषद् के इस महावाक्य को मूल
मानकर चलते हैं उसी प्रकार द्वैतवादी भी । पर दोनौं
उससे भिन्न भिन्न अर्थ लेते हैं । अद्वैतवादी 'तत्वमसि' का
सीधा अर्थ लेते है कि 'तुम वही (ब्रह्म) हो', पर द्वैतवादी
मघ्वाचार्य ने खींच तानकर उसका अर्थ लगाया है 'तस्य त्वं
असि' अर्थात् तुम उसके हो । न्याय और वैशेषिक में तीन
नित्य पदार्थ माने गए हैं—जीवात्मा, परमेश्वर और पर-
माणु । इस प्रकार के द्वैतवाद का खंडन ही शंकर ने
अपने अद्वैतवाद द्वारा किया है । जिस प्रकार शंकराचार्य
ने वेदांतसुत्र का भाष्य करके अपना अद्वैतवाद स्थापित
किया है उसी प्रकार मध्वाचार्य ने उक्त सुत्र का एक
भाष्य रचकर द्वैतवाद का मंडन किया है । उनके मत से
परमेश्वर स्वतंत्र है और जीव परमेश्वर के अधीन है ।
वेदांती लोग जो जगत् को ईश्वर से अभिन्न अथवा
रज्जु सर्पवत् मानते है और जीव में ईश्वर का आरोप
करते हैं वह ठीक नहीं । जगत् और जीव सत्य है और
ईश्वर से भिन्न हैं । 'एकमेवाद्वितीय' वाक्य का अर्थ यह
नहीं है कि ईश्वर के अतिरिक्त और कुछ है ही नहीं,
जैसा कि अद्वैतवादी करते हैं । उसका अर्थ है कि ईश्वर
बहुत नहीं एक हो है । 'एव' शब्द से मध्वाचार्य यह ध्वनि
निकालते हैं कि ईश्वर सदा एक ही रहता है, एकत्व उसका
स्वभाव है वह अनेक हो नहीं सकता । अद्वितीय का अर्थ
यह है कि द्वितीय जो जीव और जगत् है सो वह नहीं है । जीव और जगत् उसकी सृष्टि है । इस प्रकार सध्वाचार्य
ने द्वैतभाव का मंडन किया है । रामानुज का विशिष्टाद्वैत
वाद द्वैत और अद्वैन के बीच का मार्ग है, द्वैतवाद से उसमें
बहुत अधिक भेद नहीं है । दे० वेदांत ।
