आसपास के प्रदेश पर पारसियों का अधिकार हो गया था ।
प्राचीन पारसी भाषा में संस्कृत के 'स' का उच्चारण 'ह' होता
था । जैसे,—संस्कृत 'सप्त' फारसी 'हफ्त' । इसी नियम के अनुसार 'सिंधु' का उच्चारण प्राचीन पारस देश में 'हिंदु'
या 'हिंद' होता था । पारसियों के धर्मग्रंथ 'आवस्ता' में
'हफ्तहिंद' का उल्लेख है जो वेदों में भी 'सप्तसिंधु' के नाम
से आया है । धीरे धीरे 'हिंद' शब्द सारे देश के लिये प्रयुक्त
होने लगा । प्राचीन यूनानी जब फारस आए, तब उन्हें
इस देश का परिचय हुआ और वे अपने उच्चारण के अनुसार
फारसी 'हिंद' को 'इंड' या 'इंडिका' कहने लगे, जिससे आजकल 'इंडिया' शब्द बना है ।
