थैली के आकार का वह ढाँचा जिसे दोनो पैरों में लोग काँटे
आदि से बचने के लिये पहनते है । जोड़ा । पनही । पादत्राण ।

विशेष—जूता दो या दो से अधिक चमडे़ के टुकड़ों को एक में
सीकर बनाया जाता है । वह भाग जो तलवे के नीचे रहता
है तला कहलाता है । ऊपर के भाग को उपल्ला कहते हैं ।
तले का पिछला भाग एंडी या एँड़ और अगला भाग नोक
यो ठोकर कहलाता हैं । उपल्ले के वे अंश जो पैर के दोनो ओर खडे़ उठे रहते हैं, दीवार कहलाते हैं । वह चमडे़ की पट्टी
जो एँड़ी के ऊपर दोनों दिवारों के जोड़ पर लगी रहती है,
लंगोट कहलाती है । देशी जूते कई प्रकार के होते हैं । जैसे,—
पंजाबी, दिल्लीवाल, सलीमशाही, गुरगावी, घेतला, चट्टी
इत्यादि । अंग्रेजी जूतों के भी कई भेद होते हैं । जैसे, बूट,
स्लिपर, पंप इत्यादि ।
महाभारत के अनुशासन पर्व में छाते और जूते के आविष्कार के
संबंध में उपाख्यान है । युधिष्ठिर ने भीम से पुछा कि
श्राद्ध आदि कर्मों में छाता और जूता दान करने का जो विधान
है उसे किसने निकाला । भीष्म जी ने कहा कि एक बार
जमदग्नि ऋषि क्रिड़ावश धनुष पर बाण चढ़ा चढ़ाकर छोड़ते
थे और उनकी पत्नी रेणुका फेके हुए बाणों को ला लाकर
उन्हें देती थी । धीरे धीरे दोपहर हो गई और कड़ी धुप पड़ने
लगी । ऋषि उसी प्रकार बाण छोड़ते गए । पतिब्रता रेणुका
जब बाण लाने गई तब धूप से उसका सिर चकराने लगा
और पैर जलने लगे । वह शिथिल होकर कुछ देर तक एक
वृक्ष की छाया के नीचे बैठ गई । इसके उपरांत वह बाणों को
एकत्र करके ऋषि के पास लाई । ऋषि कुद्ध होकर देर होने
का कारण बार बार पूछने लगे । रेणुका ने बस ब्यवस्था ठीक
ठीक कह सुनाई । तब तो जन्मदग्नि जी सूर्य पर अत्यंत
कुद्ध हुए और धनुष पर बाण चढाकर सूर्य को मार गिराने
पर तैयार हुए । इसपर सूर्य ब्राम्हण के वश में ऋषि के पास
आए और कहने लगे सूर्य ने आपका क्या बिगाड़ा है जो आप
उन्हें मार गिराने को प्रस्तुत हुए हैं । सूर्य से लोक का कितना
उपकार होता है ? जब इसपर भी ऋषि का क्रोध शांत न
हुआ तो ब्राम्हण वेशधारी सूर्य ने कहा कि सूर्य तो सदा वेग के
साथ चलते रहते हैं । आप का लक्ष्य ठीक कैसे बैठेगा ? ऋषि
ने कहा जब मध्यान्ह में कुछ क्षण विश्राम के लिये वे ठहर
जाते हैं तब मैं मारूँगा । इसपर सूर्य ऋषि की शरण में
आए । तब ऋषि ने कहा कि 'अच्छा' ? अब कोई ऐसा उपाय
