काल के एक विभाग का नाम जो वर्ष के
बारहवें भाग के बराबर होता है । महीना ।
विशेष—मास (को) सौर, (ख) चांद्र, (ग) नाक्षत्र या बार्हस्पत्य
और (घ) सावन भेद चार प्रकार का होता है । (क) सौर
मास उतने काल को कहते हैं जितने काल तक सूर्य का उदय
किसी एक राशि में हो; अर्थात् सूर्य की एक संक्रांति से दूसरी
संक्रांति तक का समय सौर मास कहलाता है । यह मास प्रायः
तीस इकतीस और कभी कभी उनतीस और बत्तीस दिन
का भी होता है । (ख) चांद्र मास चंद्रमा की कला की वृद्धि
और ह्वासवाले दो पक्षों का होता है जिन्हें शुक्ल और कृष्ण
कहते हैं । यह मास दो प्रकार का होता है—एक मुख्य और
दूसरा गौण । जो मास शुक्ल प्रतिपदा से आरंभ होकर
अमावास्या को समाप्त होता हैं, उसे मुख्य चांद्र मास कहते हैं ।
इसका दूसरा नाम अमांत भी है । गौण चांद्र मास कृष्ण
प्रतिपदा से आरंभ होता है और पूर्णिमा् को समाप्त होता है । इसे पूर्णिमांत भी कहते हैं । दोनों प्रकार के मास अट्ठाइस
दिन के और कभी घट बढ़कर उन्तीस, तीस और सत्ताइस
दिन के भी होते हैं । (ग) नाक्षत्र मास उतना काल है जितने
में चंद्रमा सत्ताइस नक्षत्रों में भ्रमण करता है । यह मास
लगभग २७ दिन का होता है और उस दिन से प्रारंभ होता है
जिस दिन चंद्रमा अश्विनी नक्षत्र में प्रवेश करता है; और
उस दिन समाप्त होता है, जिस दिन वह रेवती नक्षत्र से
निकलता है । (घ) सावन मास का व्यवहार व्यापार आदि
व्यावहारिक कामों में होता है और यह तीस दिन का होता है । यह किसी दिन से प्रारंभ होकर तीसवें दिन समाप्त
होता है । सौर और चांद्र भेद से इसके भी दो भेद हैं ।
सौर सावन मास सौर मास की किसी तिथि से और चांद्र
सावन मास चांद्र मास की किसी तिथि या दिन से प्रारंभ
होकर उसके तीसवें दिन सप्ताह होता है । प्रत्येक संवत्सर में
बारह सौर और बारह ही चांद्र मास होते है; पर सौर वर्ष
३६५ दिनों का और चांद वर्ष ३५५ दिनों का होता है, जिससे
दोनों में प्रतिवर्ष १० दिन का अंतर पड़ता है । इस वैषम्य को
दूर करने के लिये प्रति तीसरे वर्ष बारह के स्थान में तेरह
चांद्र मास होते हैं । ऐसे बड़े हुए मास को अधिमास या मलमास
कहते हैं । विशेष दे० 'अधिमास' और 'मलमास' ।
वैदिक काल में मास शब्द का व्यवहार चांद्र मास के लिये होता
था । इसी से संहिताओं और ब्राह्मण में कहीं बारह महीने का
संवत्सर और कहीं तेरह महीने का संवत्सर मिलता है ।
