अपनी राजधानी बनाई । ३९५ में रोम राज्य, पूर्वीय और
पश्चिमीय राज्य, जिसकी राजधानी रोम थी, धीरे धीरे
निर्बल होता गया और उसे गाथ, फ्रेंच आदि जातियों ने
ध्वंस कर दिया; और पूर्वोय राज्य ही सन् ४७६ से रोम राज्य
कहलाने लगा । यूरोप के दक्षिणपूर्व का भाग, एशिया का
पश्चिमी भाग तथा उत्तरी अफ्रीका और अनेक टापू इस
साम्राज्य के अंतर्भूत थे । तब से तुर्को को, जिसका प्रधान
नगर कुस्तुंतुनिया है, रूम कहने लगे, और अब तक उसे
रूम ही कहते हैं ।
