VistaVision

VistaVision

VistaVision is a 35mm film format and a panoramic screen introduced in the 1950s by Paramount as an alternative to the CinemaScope. With the advent of audio soundtrack sound film recorded on film, film-size on 35mm film had been standardized in 22mm x 16mm, the so-called Academy Standard format, with a width-height ratio of about 1 , 37 or, in other words, 1.37: 1. In order to be able to project on "panoramic" screens, several processes were studied, which can be categorized into three categories: multiple film processes, anamorphosis-based procedures such as Panavision's CinemaScope or Anamorphic, and procedures based on the use of negatives with more resolving power, just like VistaVision.
