Uranium 235 is one of the isotopes of uranium. It was discovered by Arthur Jeffrey Dempster in 1935. Unlike uranium 238, uranium 235 causes a chain reaction of fission. The nucleus of uranium 235 splits into two when absorbing neutrons. Also, at this time, two or three neutrons are emitted, so that the reaction continues further. In nuclear power generation, the reaction is controlled with a control rod made of boron, cadmium, hafnium or the like which absorbs a large amount of neutrons. In nuclear weapons, the reaction is not controlled, a large amount of energy is released at once and a nuclear explosion occurs. The energy generated by nuclear fission of uranium 235 is 200 MeV per atom and 18 TJ per mole. Uranium 235 produces about 500 million times the calories of the same amount of sugar.
