급성부식성위염 위점막에 부식성 물질(강산, 강알칼리 등)이 작용해서 생긴다. 자살목적으로 사용한 경우가 많다. 자각적으로는 강한 위부작열감을 수반하는 경련성 통증, 식도부식에 의한 통증이 있는 것외에, 오심ㆍ구토가 있고 토물에는 혈액이 섞여 있는 경우가 많다. 전신증상은 중증의 경우 허탈상태가 되고 빈맥, 청색증를 보게 된다. 입술, 구강에도 부식을 볼 수 있고 이것은 진단상 도움이 된다. 중독증상은 3~4일 지속하고 위천공으로인한 복막염, 허탈로 인해서 사망하는 수가 있다. 장기간 경과하면 식도협착, 유문협착, 위축성 위염도 속발한다.
