The social class (social hierarchy) refers to a group of people who are distinguished within a society. Existing societies, as we know from experience, have a certain degree of stratification and the stratum has a hierarchy. The closest example is the stratification that results from the difference in income from the top of the profession or the profession. The difference in profession or income also involves social honor and up and down of prestige. A prestige is a measure of psychological or mental evaluation that an individual receives from another person or society as a whole. The difference in income and prestige is combined with the status in the governance structure, which can be seen in the distinction between the elite and the masses, the ruling class and the ruling class. Individuals are subject to the distribution of power or subject to their dominance in terms of their status within the governance structure.

사회 계층(社會階層)은 한 사회 안에서 구별되는 인간 집단을 말한다. 현존하는 사회는 우리가 경험에 의해서 알고 있는 바와 같이 일정한 성층성(成層性)을 가지고 있고 그 성층은 hierarchy(서열적 상하관계의 구조) 상태를 이루고 있다. 그 가장 비근한 예는 직업의 상위나 그에 의거한 수입의 차이에 따라 생기는 성층이다. 직업이나 수입의 차이에는 또 사회적인 명예와 위신의 상하가 수반된다. 위신이란 개인이 타인이나 사회 전체로부터 받는 심리적 혹은 정신적 평가의 고저를 의미하는 말이다. 또 수입이나 위신의 차이에는 엘리트와 대중, 지배층과 피지배층 등의 구별에서 볼 수 있는 지배 구조 내에 있어서의 지위가 결합되고 있다. 지배 구조내에 있어서의 지위를 점하는 데 따라 개인은 권력의 배분을 받는다든지 그 지배의 대상이 된다든지 한다.
