Hartal
Hartal is the word Gujerati which means mass protests, usually involving a strike, closure of work, office, shop and court as a form of public default. The term is popular in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, especially the Indian independence warrior Mahatma Gandhi. For Mahatma Gandhi, hartal is a religious element that is fasting, prayers but excluding violence. Hartal was first held in Malaysia / Malaya on 20 October 1947, organized by the Malayan Council for Joint Action of the People's Power Center as a protest to the Constitution proposed by the British colonizers. General strike was held in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s like Hartal Malaya 1947 and Hartal Pulau Pinang 1967.
