Probosis

Probosis

Probosis is a long-standing appendage of animal heads, both vertebrates and invertebrates. For invertebrates, this term usually refers to members of the tubular mouth used to eat or inhale, eg butterflies. For vertebrates, this term also means a very long nose or sharpening, for example an elephant. The term probosis comes from the Greek, προβοσκίς, which consists of πρό "forward, before" + βόσκω, "eat, nourish".
