Osmosis refers to the net movement of the solvent molecule across a semi-permeable membrane from the high concentration area to the low concentration area. This process is a passive process and occurs when two different concentrations of solvents are separated by a semi-permeable membrane, which is a special membrane that can only be passed by solvent molecules only and non-soluble in molecules. This process occurs in natural cell membranes or artificial membranes without any energy use. In a closed system, this process occurs due to the random movement of the molecules and continues until the concentration of the molecules becomes balanced throughout the system.

Osmosis merujuk kepada pergerakan bersih molekul pelarut menyeberangi satu membran separuh telap dari kawasan berkepekatan tinggi kepada kawasan berkepekatan rendah. Proses ini adalah satu proses pasif dan berlaku apabila dua larutan dengan kepekatan yang berlainan diasingkan oleh satu membran separa telap, iaitu membran khusus yang hanya boleh dilalui oleh molekul pelarut sahaja dan bukan molekul bahan yang tidak larut. Proses ini berlaku pada membran sel semula jadi atau membran buatan tanpa menggunakan sebarang tenaga. Dalam satu sistem tertutup, proses in terjadi akibat pergerakan rawak molekul dan berterusan sehingga kepekatan molekul menjadi seimbang dalam seluruh sistem itu.
