Aureus

Aureus, nummus aureus, denarius aureus - gold coin from the 1st century. Early in the 4th century. It was first emptied by Sulla at his consul 84/83 p.n.e., then by Pompey and Caesar. During this period the 40 aureus was beaten with gold libra and the value of the coin was fixed on 23 silver denars. The significance of the aureus increased during the reign of Octavian Augustus, who introduced him permanently to the monetary system, beating the gold coin in considerable amounts - mainly in the central mint of Lugdunum. Aureusy Octavian had a weight of 7.79 g. Their ruler value was set at 25 denarii. Due to the increase in the price of silver in relation to gold in the subsequent years of the first century, e., While maintaining Augusta's mint rate, decreased the cost of denarii, leading to a significant decrease in their emissions and an increase in the number of emitted aureus. Basically, in the first century, except for Vespasian, simultaneous emission of aureus and denominator of the same type was performed. On the obverse there was always a representation of the emperor with an inscription containing his names.
