Bissau

Bissau - the capital of Guinea Bissau. It is the largest city and the main port of the country with 427,400 inhabitants. Located on the island at the mouth of the river Gêba to the Atlantic Ocean. The city was founded in 1687 by the Portuguese as a fortified port, being a slave trade center at the time. In the 19th century, it became the largest shopping center in Guinea. In 1942, the city became the capital of the region. In 1974 it became the capital of independent Guinea-Bissau. Food industry, wood, crafts; Bissau International Airport. The main products from these areas are palm oil, peanuts and rubber. The main attractions of the city are the annual carnival and numerous beaches. Bissau also houses the National Institute of Arts and the stadium. During the civil war, the center was heavily damaged, including the Presidential Palace and the French Cultural Center. The rest of the city has not yet developed well. Bissau – stolica Gwinei Bissau. Jest największym miastem i głównym portem kraju z 427 400 mieszkańcami. Położone na wyspie u ujścia rzeki Gêba do Oceanu Atlantyckiego. Miasto założone zostało w 1687 przez Portugalczyków jako ufortyfikowany port, będąc w tamtych czasach ośrodkiem handlu niewolnikami. W XIX wieku nabrało rangi największego centrum handlowego na terenie Gwinei Portugalskiej. W 1942 roku miasto stało się stolicą regionu. W 1974 roku zostało stolicą niepodległej Gwinei Bissau. Przemysł spożywczy, drzewny, rzemiosło; międzynarodowy port lotniczy Bissau. Główne produkty z tych terenów to olej palmowy, orzeszki ziemne i guma. Głównymi atrakcjami miasta jest coroczny karnawał oraz liczne plaże. W Bissau znajduje się także Narodowy Instytut Sztuk oraz stadion. Podczas wojny domowej centrum zostało bardzo zniszczone, w ruinę popadł między innymi Pałac Prezydencki i Francuskie Centrum Kultury. Reszta miasta nie zdążyła się jeszcze dobrze rozwinąć.
