Historical linguistics - a section of general linguistics dealing with the study of relationships that occur between elements of language in different epochs of its development. Diachronic linguistics studies the changes that occur in the language over time. The main task of diachronic linguistics is to describe these changes and to formulate on this basis the general principles applicable to the evolution of languages. One of the first, most famous of these was Grimma Law, formulated in 1822 by Jacob Grimm, first and second consonant scissors in some Germanic languages. However, most observations and rules formulated by the diachronists have a much narrower "frame" and are about linguistic changes with relatively small ranges - most often referring to only one language and the change that takes place at the border of two epochs. Sharp contrast of synchronous diachronic linguistics was introduced by Ferdinand de Saussure.

Językoznawstwo diachroniczne, językoznawstwo historyczne – dział językoznawstwa ogólnego zajmujący się badaniem relacji jakie występują między elementami języka w różnych epokach jego rozwoju. Językoznawstwo diachroniczne bada więc zmiany, jakie zachodzą w języku z upływem czasu. Głównym zadaniem językoznawstwa diachronicznego jest opisanie tych zmian i sformułowanie na tej podstawie możliwie ogólnych zasad obowiązujących w ewolucji języków. Jedną z pierwszych, najsławniejszych zasad tego typu było prawo Grimma sformułowane w 1822 przez Jacoba Grimma, ustalające przebieg tzw. pierwszej i drugiej przesuwki spółgłoskowej w niektórych językach germańskich. Jednak większość obserwacji i zasad formułowanych przez diachronistów ma znacznie węższe „ramy” i dotyczy zmian językowych o stosunkowo niewielkim zasięgu – najczęściej chodzi o jeden tylko język i zmianę, która w nim zachodzi na granicy dwóch epok. Ostre przeciwstawienie językoznawstwa diachronicznego synchronicznemu wprowadził Ferdynand de Saussure.
