Helvetica is one of the most popular proportional one-piece typefaces. Originally developed as a font by Max Miedinger in 1957 for Haas'sche Schriftgießerei from Switzerland. The name of the cut is derived from the word Helvetia, the Roman name of the present Swiss territories. A lot of modifications have been made by other designers, especially in the form of computer fonts, or fonts. Among others The Arial, which is distributed with Microsoft Windows operating systems and Mac OS, has the same width as Helvetica, but differs from it in just a few details - apparently the difference is in small letters "Q", "R" and "G" Even more similar to Helvetica is the popular Bitstream Swiss 721, in which the only differences are the slightly different proportions of the lines that make up the characters. Among the popular fonts, the most similar types include Nimbus Sans, One of the basic fonts of X Window.

Helvetica to jeden z najpopularniejszych proporcjonalnych jednoelementowych krojów pisma. Opracowany został pierwotnie jako czcionka przez Maxa Miedingera w 1957 r. dla firmy Haas’sche Schriftgießerei ze Szwajcarii. Nazwa kroju pochodzi od słowa Helwecja, rzymskiej nazwy obecnych terenów Szwajcarii. Krój doczekał się bardzo wielu modyfikacji przez innych projektantów, szczególnie pod postacią czcionek komputerowych, czyli fontów. M.in. krój Arial, który jest rozpowszechniany z systemami operacyjnymi Microsoft Windows oraz Mac OS ma taką samą szerokość jak Helvetica, a różni się od niej jedynie w kilku szczegółach – najwyraźniej różnicę widać w niewielkich literach „Q", „R” i „G” oraz na „ogonku” w małej literze „a”. Jeszcze bardziej podobny do Helvetiki jest popularny krój Swiss 721 firmy Bitstream, w którym jedynymi odstępstwami są bardzo lekko zmienione proporcje poszczególnych kresek tworzących znaki. Wśród popularnych fontów, do najbardziej podobnych krojów należy również Nimbus Sans, będący m.in. jednym z podstawowych fontów X Window.
