Hemiola

Hemiola

Hemiola - a rhythmic formula in which two measures in a simple three-dimensional meter are performed as three bars in a simple binary meter. The term "hemiola" is derived from the Greek adjective ἡμιόλιος, which, in the theoretical and musical context, was used by Aristocozus. The noun ἡμιολία was also used by the Greeks in reference to the galley, which was driven by one and a half rows of oars. The music originally meant a ratio of 3: 2, which created an interval of pure fifths. Around the 15th century the "hemiola" began to signify the three brevis in the bar, where the dominant metric pattern was two brevis with dots in the bar. This application was later extended to today: two triple triggers executed as if they were three bipedal measures. This character appeared in the dances of English editors and composers of Baroque and Classicism.
