Mungo

Mungo - a dry lake in southwestern New South Wales in Australia. It is located about 740 km west of Sydney and 90 km northeast of Mildura. The lake is part of the Mungo National Park and is one of seventeen lakes in the Willandra Wilderness Region, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Many important archaeological discoveries have been made in the vicinity of Lake Mungo. The most important of these are the finds called Mungo Lady and Mungo Man. Mungo Lady is a partially cremated remains of a woman discovered in 1969. When she died, she was burned, and the remains of her bones were smashed with batons or hammers and buried. Initially their age was set at 25 thousand. years, but detailed research from 2003 has postponed dating to about 40 thousand. Debris is considered the oldest known case of intentional cremation on a world scale. Mungo Man's body, discovered in 1974, was covered with red ocher after death. Earlier dating - about 60 thousand, contemporary - about 40 thousand. Traces of settlement in this area - among others. stone tools, dating back 50,000 years. Mungo – wyschnięte jezioro w południowo-zachodniej części Nowej Południowej Walii w Australii. Położone jest ok. 740 km na zachód od Sydney i 90 km na północny wschód od miejscowości Mildura. Jezioro wchodzi w skład Parku Narodowego Mungo i jest jednym z siedemnastu jezior w Regionie Wyschniętych Jezior Willandra, wpisane na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO. W okolicach jeziora Mungo dokonano wielu ważnych odkryć archeologicznych. Najważniejszymi z nich są znaleziska nazwane Mungo Lady i Mungo Man. Mungo Lady to częściowo skremowane szczątki kobiety odkryte w 1969. Kiedy zmarła, została spalona, po czym resztki kości rozbito pałkami lub młotkami i zagrzebano. Początkowo ich wiek określano na 25 tys. lat, jednak szczegółowe badania z 2003 przesunęło datowanie na około 40 tys. Szczątki uznawane są za najstarszy znany przypadek celowej kremacji w skali świata. Ciało Mungo Mana, odkryte w 1974, zostało po śmierci pokryte czerwoną ochrą. Wcześniejsze datowanie – około 60 tys., współczesne – około 40 tys.. Ślady osadnictwa na tym terenie – m.in. kamienne narzędzia, sięgają 50 tysięcy lat wstecz.
