Ababil

Ababil

Ababil is a fabulous bird mentioned in the Quran and would have been sent by Allah against the Abyssinians in order to prevent them from besieging the city of Mecca in the year Muhammad was born. The episode is described in sura 105 of the Koran, called Al-Fil. According to tradition, the name of the surah derives from a white elephant that the Abyssinians had; this animal caused such a profound impression on the Arabs that they called the year 570 "Am al-Fil" or "The Year of the Elephant."
