Belemnite

The Belemnites were carnivorous animals that possessed a soft body around an inner shell. They lived in the water and were very similar to the present squid. The Belemnites appeared in the Carboniferous period as a result of a long process of evolution. They were efficient hunters of small fish and other small marine animals, the belemnites used their tentacles to catch the prey, and then ate them with their jaws in the form of a beak. Unlike modern squid, they had hooks instead of suction cups. The Belemnites were more common from the early Jurassic period until the end of the Cretaceous period, when they were extinct, along with the dinosaurs, in the so-called K-T Event. According to some fossil evidence, the belemnites served as food for the ichthyosaurs of the time.
