Enjambement

Enjambement

French term for a poetic process that consists of the misalignment of the metric and syntactic structure of a composition, where the verses succeed each other without pauses at the end of each one. It is usually translated into Portuguese by encavalgura, by direct translation of the Spanish encabalgamiento. The process of continuing the meaning of a verse in the next verse produces straight verses, characteristic of many compositions of our Galician-Portuguese lyric. It is an alternative to traditional parallelism and we can witness it in songs of atafinda, like the famous "I want" en way of proençal / to make a song of love ". Although widely used by the Renaissance and Mannerist poets, it was only after André Chénier that the process returned to win sympathy among the poets. The romantic poets use it with some frequency, but only from the modernist poetry the process of chaining of the verses became vulgarized. Today, compositions that still obey a rigorous alignment of the verses and the syntax of the poem are rare. Source: http://www.edtl.com.pt/index. Fonte: http://www.edtl.com.pt/index.
