Geode

Geode

Geodes or geodes are rock formations that occur in volcanic rocks and occasionally in sedimentary rocks. They are essentially cavities that form in the rocks, and are covered by crystalline formations, often in the form of concentric bands. The exterior of the most common geodes is usually limestone, while the interior contains quartz crystals and / or chalcedony deposits. Other geodes are completely filled with crystals, presenting as a solid mass, and they take the name of nodules. The geodes can form in any buried cavity. These cavities are usually gas bubbles inside igneous rocks, pockets beneath the roots of trees, vesicles in lava after a volcanic eruption or even burrows of animals. Over time, the outer wall of the cavity hardens, and the dissolved silicates and carbonates deposit on the inner surface; the slow supply of mineral constituents by groundwater or by hydrothermal solutions allows the formation of crystals within the hollow chamber.
