Hindustani or Hindustan is a language of northern India, from which the standard Hindi and Urdu languages ​​have developed. It was understood in much of the north and center of the Indian subcontinent and today is a lingua franca of oral and informal use in North India and Pakistan. The term Urdu arose around 1780. In 1796, John Borthwick Gilchrist published a grammar of the language, which he called "hindoostanee". During the British raj, the term "Hindustani" was used by British officers, from "Hindustan", the former name of the region. After independence, the use of the term was reduced, being largely replaced by "Hindi", "Urdu" or "Hindi-Urdu". Finally, with the partition of India in 1947, the two languages, written with distinct alphabets, came to be considered as different. More recently, the term has been used for the colloquial language of Bollywood films, which are popular in India and Pakistan and which can not be identified specifically as Hindi or Urdu.
