Liburna or Liburniana was a type of small galley used in Antiquity and High Middle Ages for patrolling and raiding, particularly by the Roman navy. The name is associated with the origin of the vessel, which was inspired by those used by pirates from Liburnia, a part of Illyria, on the Adriatic Sea. It was a light ship, with a row of oars, a mast with a sail, and a stiff bow. Beneath the bow had a face to attack the enemy ships under water. In its original form, the liburna was similar to the penteconter and had a bench with 25 rowers on each side. At the end of the Roman Republic it was equipped with two banks of paddlers, but it continued to be faster, agile and lighter than the triremes. The liburna model was adopted by the Romans and became an essential part of the navy of Ancient Rome, possibly through the Macedonian navy in the second half of the first century BC The liburnas played a key role in the battle of Actium in Greece which was important for the establishment of Augustus as the uncontested leader of the Roman world.

O nome está associado à origem da embarcação, a qual foi inspirada nas que eram usadas por piratas da Libúrnia, uma parte da Ilíria, no mar Adriático. Era um navio ligeiro, com uma fila de remos, um mastro com uma vela e com a proa retorcida. Debaixo da proa tinha um rostro para atacar os navios inimigos por baixo de água. Na sua forma original, a liburna era similar ao penteconter e tinha um banco com 25 remadores em cada lado. No final da República Romana era equipado com dois bancos de remadores, mas continuava a ser mais rápido, ágil e ligeiro do que os trirremes. O modelo da liburna foi adotado pelos Romanos e tornou-se uma parte essencial da marinha da Roma Antiga, possivelmente por intermédio da marinha macedónia na segunda metade do século I a.C. As liburnas tiveram um papel fundamental na batalha de Áccio, na Grécia, que foi importante para o estabelecimento de Augusto como líder incontestado do mundo romano.
