Melanoma is a type of cancer that strikes epithelial tissue, more specifically the skin. It represents 5% of the skin cancers, being the most serious. Melanoma originates in the melanocytes, cells located in the epidermis, responsible for the production of melanin and, therefore, for the color of the skin. It's always evil. In Portugal, about 700 new cases of malignant melanoma appear each year. In the Western countries, every year melanoma has increased.

Melanoma é um tipo de câncer que atinge o tecido epitelial, mais especificamente a pele. Representa 5% dos tipos de câncer da pele, sendo o mais grave. O melanoma origina-se nos melanócitos, células localizadas na epiderme, responsáveis pela produção de melanina e, portanto, pela cor da pele. É sempre maligno. Em Portugal surgem, anualmente, cerca de 700 novos casos de melanoma maligno. Nos países ocidentais, todos os anos o melanoma tem aumentado.
