Carcinoma

Carcinoma

Carcinoma is a malignant tumor developed from epithelial, glandular or trophoblast cells that tends to invade circular tissues causing metastases. The most common sites of carcinoma-like lesions are skin, mouth, lung, breast, stomach, cervix, prostate, and penis. This text addresses exclusively a specific type of skin cancer. Despite the high incidence rates, non-melanoma skin cancer presents high cure rates mainly due to the ease of early diagnosis. Basal cell carcinomas originate from the epidermis and cutaneous appendages above the basal layer, such as hairs, for example. Epidermoid carcinomas have origin in the keratinocyte of the epidermis, and can also appear in the squamous epithelium of the mucous membranes. Individuals who work with direct exposure to the sun are more vulnerable to nonmelanoma skin cancer. This type of cancer is more common in adults with peaks of incidence around age 40. However, with the constant exposure of young people to sunlight, the average age of patients has been decreasing.
