Atualmente, o termo é usado tanto no âmbito privado como público para designar um elo imparcial entre uma instituição e sua comunidade de usuários. Nos países de língua portuguesa, as palavras "ouvidor" e "provedor" são mais utilizadas como substitutas ao nome estrangeiro. Na Espanha, usa-se o termo "Defensor do Povo".
