The orca is the largest member of the dolphin family and a versatile predator, which includes in its diet prey such as fish, mollusks, birds, turtles, seals, sharks and larger animals when hunting in groups such as whales . The name "whale-killer" is not the most correct because it is a direct translation of the English "killer whale", and because the animal is not a whale. Têm uma vida social complexa, baseada na formação e manutenção de grupos familiares extensos. Comunicam-se através de sons e costumam viajar em formações que assomam ocasionalmente à superfície. A primeira descrição da espécie foi feita por Plínio, o Velho o qual já a descrevia como um monstro marítimo feroz.
